Fire Investigation 1 - Course Registration Form

The Lorain County Association of Fire Investigators, in conjunction with the State Fire Marshal's Fire Investigation & Explosives Bureau, has scheduled a training course for Fire Investigation 1, beginning May 12 and ending June 21. This 80-hour class will be conducted on Tue & Thurs evenings (1830-2230) and alternating Saturdays. Class will be held at the Oberlin fire station, 430 S. Main St, Oberlin OH.

Students will learn the fundamentals of fire scene investigation for origin and cause determination through interactive classroom presentations, lecture, group exercises and hands-on practical exercise. Upon completion of this course, students will have the basic tools needed to participate in a fire origin and cause investigation.  

This course is intended for applicants with at least 5 years’ experience in fire service and/or law enforcement. The course complies with NFPA 1033, Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Investigators.   Selected candidates should be responsible for determining the origin and cause of fires for their employer.

Class participants must bring flashlight, camera, protective gear (coveralls, helmet, work gloves, latex gloves, hard sole shoes and safety glasses) for site investigation work on designated days.

Also required for classroom work: NFPA 921 (current edition), departmental investigation forms (if any), laptop computer (optional per student).

PRE-REQUISITES FOR APPLICATION:   

  • Completed Ohio Fire Academy application
  • Copy of completed qualifications statement signed by department chief.
  • Copy of NIMS I-100, I-200, I-700, I-800 certificates
  • Copy of NCIC background check dated within 6 months of start of class. (Check with your local PD, or may complete at Lorain County Sheriff's office, Mon-Wed-Fri, 9a-4p ($57 fee)
  • Law enforcement students need to have fire behavior training
  • All of above certificates/paperwork must be returned on first class day (NO EXCEPTIONS)
